How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a prominent role as your furnace prepares to warm your space.
Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board starts running the draft inducer blower motor. This drains combustion gases from the heat exchanger and pulls in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that sufficient air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and tells the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and supplies heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down
When your pressure switch isn’t operating correctly, you’ll likely hear the fan run and the switch clicking multiple times before the furnace switches off completely. When a part isn’t functioning right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.
Your furnace will show you something is amiss with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to display error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may see fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.
